That sign is (or was) on US 6 just east of Tonopah. I’ve been there but I don’t recall seeing the sign. But it’s probably still correct if you’re headed to Ely. It’s slightly shorter the nearest gas in Alamo. There are apparently people who care about this sort of thing. The record for the longest stretch between gas stations in the lower 48 seems to be 179 miles north of Winnemucca to Adel, OR.

So I'm guessing your trip is: 120 miles to the trailhead, 60 miles of wheeling, and 120 miles back home; total 300 miles. Right? And then you doubled that to compensate for the fact that off-roading is less efficient. But that's not quite right. You only need to double the 60 off-road miles. So your equivalent range needed is 120 + 120 + 60*2 = 360. So if you believe Rivian's numbers you would get home with 40 miles to spare.



See above. But if don't believe that (and it is open to debate how much an EV off-roader would use in various kinds of terrain) you could still charge once during your lunch break without costing yourself much. If you do that whole 8+ hour trip without a break you're a tougher man than I.:yup:



We're not there yet but it's not as bad as you may think. Here's a map showing all the Tesla Superchargers (60% in 1/2 hr) in red and Tesla "destination chargers" (full charge in 5 or 6 hours) in black:

That's as of today; Tesla is building more as fast as they can get building permits. There are also a large and increasing number of non-Tesla high speed chargers:

In a pinch one can also charge at many campgrounds and RV parks. One can also get a 50% charge overnight almost anywhere there's electric power.

Is this as convenient as gasoline? No. Is it really much of a burden? No, again. The only real inconvenience is that it takes a bit of planning to find the chargers. But, of course, Tesla makes that easy by displaying them on the NAV screen in the car. Charging time is a bigger issue. (The power level of a gas pump is truly awesome.) But my experience has been that it is usually convenient to combine charging with another stop that I would have made anyway. Sometimes not. We're not there yet. But it's not as bad as you think.

You do realize that these charging stations are on the public power grid? You do realize that the majority of the power grid is coal fired, even though solar and wind suppy is increasing (at an extremely high cost). So your Tesla is in fact likely to be coal powered when not plugged into your home solar farm. You must have a big yard. How do you charge over night by the way, when your meter is drawing power not feeding power. Hmmm.

Climate change is a reality. That is why half of North America is not under a mile of ice or hundreds of feet of water. Deserts were once swamps. Must have been all the cars the dinosaurs were driving. How about the output of just one major volcanic eruption compared to all the man made emissions.

Do I believe we should do better, yes. But are we causing the end of the world, not hardly. Others have already pointed out the climate change from before modern society with previous ice ages (plural) and flood/swamp events from the warmer periods in between, but that is ignored in climate change media debates in the liberal news. Why, it doesn’t support the hypothesis and conclusions.

There is a reason Al Gore changed the story from global warming to climate change. It was too easy to poke holes in. Have you seen his place? He practices what he preaches you know. As hot as summers are now, and as cold as winter is (even as bad as this winter), it was both hotter and colder when I was a kid. The weather runs in cycles. This is well established.

I have fought and bled for your right to freedom of speech and to believe what you want, but I don’t have to sit quietly by and listen without responding. I am fairly well educated but also not the smartest in the room. But if AOC or Bernie are who you believe to be your saviors, and wish to follow their lead, then go out and by multiple houses and take private planes everywhere when you preach about climate change. But if you take it seriously, then start walking or riding bikes EVERYWHERE you go and stop eating beans.

Thank you both. The assignment I’m in now, makes me have to be more careful in how I speak. But it sure getting harder.

I forgot to add how bad lithium batteries are and how often they need to be replaced. As much as I love them. My uncle gave up driving a Cadillac years ago for a Prius. He is on his third Prius now because of the batteries. He lives a long ways from town and does his best to pull over 60mpg out of it. My Aunt said they drive to town everyday (over 30 miles each way) so good gas mileage helps. He still has his farm truck though. He is about 80. But he makes up for his green ways by running cattle on his 420 acres so they can fart a lot. Not to mention several oil wells to boot. LOL. (All true).

And, if Bill Arnett wants to come follow a group on a real desert run in his EV wheeler, he better bring a generator and a lot of gas to charge it back up before it bricks far from the grid and past where AAA will come and get you
