Auto trans shifter

How does this operate? Is it by wires or with linkage? I always thought it was with linkage but someone said it uses wires to select the gear based on the movement location of the shifter? Pros and cons of this? If it is true,.

The transfer case is still mechanical but so far as I know, the new automatic transmission is shift by wire now.

Pros, the new 8-speed is awesome. Cons, anything controlled by wires can have issues that can be tough if not impossible to deal with on the trail.
