New Jeep is in, old Jeep is still broke

I just saw my new Jeep arrived today. Woohoo. Only 60 days from order. Dang.

The big BUT.

the problem is my 13 is still broke. It has been in the shop for 8 days now. I have had an ongoing misterious issue. I have 50000 miles in 5 years and am on my third transfer case. They replaced the driveshaft this time, only to find out that only helped, but didn’t fix it. Now they have a new transfer case on order as of today. It will likely be another week now, and transfer case #4. Mostly highway miles, only been to the “mall” once and essentially still stock.

New Jeep is six hours away, old Jeep about 20 minutes away (not the same dealer).

I knew giving JAGS a hard time about picking his up was gonna bite me.

Man, what a bummer about your 13. If you don't mind me asking, what were the symptoms you were having?

Hope you get your new JL home soon. Can't wait to see pics of it :thumb:

Stopped by on the way home from the doctor. Never got to see it first hand before. The photos don’t show much. It is the splines going into the transfer case that are shearing off. It trashes the shaft and the input gear. That shaft is supposed to be flush against the input gear also.

My assessment is the automatic transmission doesn’t drop out gear (neutral) when you shift gears or coast to a stop. It isn’t much of a jerk but just keeps working against it. Could be the torque converter staying locked up.

Every one is puzzled by it. That transfer case was put in 12 months ago.

The symptoms are some ever increasing play/slack in the drive line. It isn’t much, but then it finally shears the splines. This time I got it in before it was totally gone. And this time there was also excessive play in the rzeppa joint as well. First time for that. So they replaced the drive shaft first, he said it was pretty bad.

Apparently nobody has heard of this exact issue. No where on the net or two different dealers, and higher level techs in two regions. Nor a particular engineer.

Hi RMC2,

Although we're glad to hear about your new Jeep, we apologize for the delay you're experiencing with the other one. If you need us to get this over to a Case Specialist to get things moving, let me know. I am available via direct message and would be happy to help.

Message sent. I’m not upset with my service guy.

I left out a week on the timeline. The 13 was dropped off on 17 April. So it has been 2 1/2 weeks already. I may have it back mid week next week. MAYBE.

My biggest concern is that I am confident that it will break again on the next person, in another year, and not be under warranty.

Got my Jeep back yesterday after just just over three weeks. Now I can go get my JLUR on Saturday. Yes it has been tough waiting to go pick it up.

New transfer case (#4) and driveshaft.
