We've had ours for about 3k now. No issues with the power train. We ran 87 octane originally and it would ping going uphill but no performance issues. We run 91 or higher now and no pinging.

I catch myself spinning 35 inch tires on my Gladiator all the time. Granted it's got 4.11s in it. I'm guessing your rental doesn't have the max tow with lower gears.
