Transmission question

I recently purchased a 2018 jlus and I had a 2011 jk. I have a 8 speed automatic transmission now . I've noticed that when I take my foot off the gas and it goes into 3rd gear down to first that it feels like the lower gears slow the truck down slightly. It feels like what a person who has a manual does to use the lower gear to slow the car instead of braking. I dont know much about motors or transmission but this is the first automatic transmission I've had where I can really notice the gear shifts kind of slowing the truck. Is this normal with the jl 8 speed tranny?

Newer transmissions lock up the torque convertor more often. I'm guessing that is what your feeling over your older automatics.

Thats also the reason why sometimes loadtransfers are rougher than on old ATs, at least on my JL
