JACKED UP our TAILGATE

Ever since Cindy and I decided to mount a 37" spare tire on the back of our Jeep JL Wrangler, people have been decrying the intelligence of it and have been insisting that we would break our tailgate. After all, they had seen it happen on the internet and so it must be true. And, what can I say - they were right. By the end of our trip to Moab, we found that we did in fact break our tailgate only... it wasn't where we were told it would happen AND, our spare tire had nothing to do with it.

As you can see in this photo, the break we found was on the INSIDE of our tailgate and on the bottom of the vented plastic cover.

From what we could tell, one of our tool bags or maybe portable air compressor slammed into the back of the tailgate while taking on a big obstacle and the impact was hard enough to break the plastic cover.

It's a bummer for sure especially being we never saw it coming. Too bad nobody had posted this on the internet. :rolleyes2:

Anyway, it really isn't that big of a deal and maybe we'll be able to cover it up with a tray table or something. Either way, we're still waiting for the rest of the tailgate to self-destruct, you know, because we mounted a 37" tire on it.

UPDATE 04/23/18 : JACKED UP NO MORE
It'd been so long since I ordered a new interior trim panel for our JL's tailgate that I almost forgot all about it. But, it finally did come in and here are a few shots of what it looked like before, during and after the new trim was installed.

Shot of JET Li sitting next to Pappy and getting ready to get fixed up.

New trim acquired and ready to be installed.

New trim panel installed. Notice the mounting points for a Trail Rail or even trail table.

And just like that, our tailgate is whole again.

Oh and for those of you who are wanting to know what the part is if this ever happens to you, this is what you'll need.

Panel-Swing Gate Trim : 6BM40TX7AB

Should cost about $60

I wouldn’t have believed it if you hadn’t posted it on the Internet. But you did. So I do. :)

BTW, are those slots open so one could thread MOLLE straps thru?

LOL!! They're just air vent slots. The plastic is light weight and brittle - even if you could thread MOLLE through them, I don't know if I'd trust it to hold anything heavy.

There's some pretty big obstacles in the Bed, Bath, and Beyond parking lot. I think you need to wheel lighter.

The JL is lighter now. You likely picked up a few extra HP and better fuel economy. Seriously though, you should close the tailgate when you go up and down obstacles. :)

Looks like a manufacturer's defect, "I swear it just broke"

Right! That's what happened, I just looked at it and out of nowhere, it broke!

I'm telling ya, it's those speed bumps by the front entrance.

LOL!! Seriously :cheesy:

I’m sure you will be able to buy a replacement soon. Or put a tailgate table there.

A tray table is definitely in the plans but I'm pretty sure it still goes over the plastic. Maybe it'll hide it though.

Was being semi serious. Can't hurt to try...

Too funny. Nah - that would really make me, "that guy". Shit happens. That being said, you wouldn't happen to have a part number for this that I can reference, would you? :yup:

True. I've never tried to warranty anything and I am sure I could get it covered

Part number is 6BM40TX7AB

I kind of agree. I think that plastic seems way too brittle to be on a tailgate. People slam the tailgate on stuff that's in the trunk all the time. When the door is closed, cargo is slipping back and forth slamming into the tailgate plastic. Jeep should have made that plastic with a little more flexibility to not allow it to crack like that. I'd talk to the dealer at least. Jeep needs to know for future builds. They may be able to modify the plastic material to inlcude a more elastic polymer in their blend.

That info will never make it from a dealer to actual HQ.

The problem with changing the plastic typically affects how the mold flows and how the material cools after being injected. This means that after a material change with the same mold the part could become brittle in certain areas or the part can become out of spec due to warpage or shrinkage. Also, the molds can be very expensive especially if it is a multi cavity mold or had a lot of ejectors so typically no one wants to retool a mold because that’s a lost of wasted money.
